Where was the first successful laparotomy performed?

Ephraim McDowell House in Danville, KY

Where was the first successful laparotomy performed?  Turns out, the first successful laparotomy (surgery entering the abdomen) was performed by Dr. Ephraim McDowell in the small town of Danville, KY.  So, we had to stop by Danville to check it out!

Jane Crawford lived in Green County and was told she was pregnant by three different doctors. When she hadn't yet delivered at 10 months, they asked Dr. McDowell for his opinion. He told her she wasn't pregnant but instead had a slowly growing ovarian tumor. She did not want to endure a slow, painful death, and Dr. McDowell offered her an operation (with the understanding that she probably wouldn't live long either way). On Christmas Day 1809 in a room in his house he removed a 22.5 pound ovarian tumor with no anesthesia.  The operation was successful and Jane Crawford recovered and lived another 32 years!
Instruments to perform a perineal urostomy (This is how Dr. McDowell removed a bladder stone from James K. Polk before he was President).

The formulary ( we still occasionally use leeches these days)
